AMD is looking to take another shot at market leader Intel
Jason Mick (Blog) - January 7, 2009 4:20 PM
DailyTech

With Intel's 45 nm Penryn dominating three and four core Phenom offerings, chipmaker AMD is desperate to do anything it can to cut into Intel's lead.  The first major change literally split the company in half, separating its manufacturing branches into a new company.

Now we're on the eve of the second major act from AMD:  the launch of the Phenom II lineup codenamed Deneb (4-core) and Heka (3-core).  With AMD debuting its new mobile platform this week, it looks to continue to make even more waves by announcing the first of its Phenom II processors this Thursday.  [Comments...]

Report: Phishing A Low-Paying, Low-Skills Job
Written by Daniel

Economic analysis says phishing in the USA isn't as lucrative as once thought

Jan 07, 2009 | 03:17 PM

Most experts agree that phishing has become more automated, sophisticated, and widespread. But that doesn't mean all phishers make big bucks, according to a recently published report.

Cormac Herley and Dinei Florencio, both from Microsoft Research, conducted an independent economic analysis (PDF) that they say refutes conventional wisdom that phishing is lucrative. Instead, the researchers -- who note their work is their own and doesn't speak for Microsoft -- used economic models to conclude that phishing is a low-paid, low-skills enterprise where the average phisher makes hundreds, not thousands, of dollars a year.   [Comments...]

Tom Spring, PC World
Jan 5, 2009 3:38 pm

The tech world's focus shifts to Las Vegas this week as the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show kicks off. Over the next week you can expect a parade of shiny, tiny, and wireless gadgets from CES exhibitors--including a 3G watch-phone from LG Electronics, a wafer-thin Samsung TV that's 6.5 millimeters thick, and an emphasis on emerging fields such as environmentally friendly green technologies and Wi-Tricity, a technology that allows wire-free power charging of small devices. Even though it wasn't CEO Steve Jobs giving the keynote, Apple couldn't resist giving users "one more thing" at its final Macworld.

After announcing updates to the iLife software suite, and a new MacBook Pro, keynote speaker Phil Schiller said there would be major changes coming to the iTunes music store, including the stripping of digital rights management, variable pricing, and tighter iPhone 3G integration. [Comments...]

HP offering free money for old tech equipment
Written by Daniel
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

Hewlett-Packard has decided to offer people in the U.S. free money in exchange for their old tech equipment, the company announced Tuesday.

January 6, 2009 8:53 AM PST

Posted by Candace Lombard

HP has had a recycling program for years in which consumers could determine the value of their old tech equipment and then use that worth to get a credit toward a new HP or Compaq brand product.
This new recycling program does not require people to buy anything to get the money for their old tech equipment, although they are responsible for postage when mailing in the item.

HP calls its new program the HP Consumer Buyback and Planet Partners Recycling Program. The program offers money in exchange for any brand of PC, monitor, printer, digital camera, or smartphone HP determines still has some sort of value. It's part of HP's effort to recycle 2 billion pounds of electronic junk by 2010. As of now, the company has recycled over 1 billion pounds.    [C/Net News....]   [Comments...]

Comcast starts new year with new network management system

Comcast says that, as of December 31, it has turned over a new leaf, network management practices-wise. The new-and-hopefully-improved "protocol agnostic" system the company unveiled to the Federal Communications Commission in September is now in effect.

"We have deployed the new technique throughout our network and turned off the P2P-specific technique everywhere in the network," Comcast spokesperson Sena Fitzmaurice told Ars.

Macworld Expo 2009 rumour mill
Written by Danrok
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

One thing is for certain, Steve Jobs won't be at this year's Macworld, but there are still plenty of rumours about what products Apple will unveil at their anual expo.

Wired.com is claiming that there will almost certainly be a Mini Mac made from aluminium and black plastic, as well as a chance of an iPhone Nano, although how useable a touch-screen would be in a small size is debateable.

More rumours here.

Four Threats For '09 That You've Probably Never Heard Of (Or Thought About)
Written by Daniel
Monday, 05 January 2009

What could keep you up at night in the new year may not be what you expect -- a look at some of the lesser-known threats predicted for 2009

Dec 31, 2008 | 12:26 PM
By Kelly Jackson Higgins
DarkReading

You're probably gearing up for the well-known security risks you've watched emerge over the past year to go front burner in the new year -- the insider threat, Web 2.0, and targeted attacks. But don't pop that champagne cork just yet: Some obscure potential threats that could be more difficult to prepare for and defend against also are looming for 2009.

These aren't your typical enterprise hack attacks. They're mainly large-scale Internet threats that could trickle down to your organization. We're talking Internet network infrastructure attacks, radical extremist hackers, Web attacks that adversely affect online ad revenue, and even the unthinkable -- human casualties as a result of a cyberattack.

UK Police to hack computers without warrants
Written by Danrok
Monday, 05 January 2009

Big Brother cometh

The UK police have now been granted the power to remotely monitor and search PCs in the United Kingdom.  So, they could feasably use tools such as key-loggers and trojans, normally associated with criminals, without seeking permission from the courts.  All they will need is the nod from a Cheif Constable.

Civil liberties groups are reported to be voicing concerns over these new surveillance powers.  "This is no different from breaking down someone's door, rifling through their paperwork and seizing their computer hard drive.", says Shami Chakrabarti, director of the human rights campaign group Liberty.

Psychic Predictions for Tech in 2009
Written by Daniel
Friday, 02 January 2009

Wonder what the tech world has in store for us in 2009? For the fun of it we asked bona fide psychics to look into their crystal ball.

JR Raphael, PC World
Dec 31, 2008 11:45 am

Countless people are trying to predict what 2009 could hold for the world of technology. Of course, it's all just guesswork -- these pundits aren't working with a crystal ball. So we decided to find someone who was.

We turned to two self-proclaimed psychics to get their takes on what's ahead for some of tech's biggest newsmakers in the new year. We received readings from Silicon Valley's surname-shunning Celia and L.A.'s "psychic angel," Shaun Moore. (Miss Cleo was unavailable -- last we heard, she was selling used cars in South Florida.)

Below, we've pitted the psychics' stances against some less clairvoyant conjectures. Check out the predictions for yourself and see which seem the most sensible. You can leave a comment if you'd like, but we suspect the psychics already know what you're thinking.

The latest to report on the possibility of layoffs at the software giant is the blog Fudzilla, which puts the number of job cuts at 15,000, or nearly 17 percent of Microsoft's worldwide operations. The January 15 date is a week before Microsoft's second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for January 22.

Microsoft also has a briefing for financial analysts planned for January 8 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with the headliner listed as Robbie Bach, president of the entertainment and devices division.
