The Realtek 650 is just a CODEC (COder/DECoder). It's pretty much just a bunch of analog to digital and digital to analog converters, with a mixer and a serial interface (AC97). It does NOT do any processing. That's the job of the audio controller.

The main difference is that the board you have only has a basic audio controller. It's a pretty normal AC97 based solution. As such, it has minimal processing power.

The 8RDA+ uses nVidia's APU. This 5.1 solution uses fully fledged DSP. It can do DSP type tricks, such as EQ, Reverb and other effects, as well as on the fly AC3 encoding. Without that DSP, there's not really any easy way of doing these sort of things.

Any views, thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. They don't necessarily represent those of my employer (BlackBerry).
