8k5a3+ Won't boot VGA error (?)

I borrowed this board from a mate who had it running with a old palamino xp2000 chip, and i intalled a new thoroughbred xp 2000 and 256mb ddr ram and my old AGP geforce2 32mb card. on bootup for the 1st time, the board correctly identified the cpu change. In the bios settings, i selected the "load optimal settings" then rebooted.

It now stops booting halting with the LED error code "2d" and the manual points to the gfx card, but ive tried another AGP and also an old pci card. The message is the same with both. However, on taking out all gfx cards, it does apppear to be letting me into bios, except i cant see it. From the pics in the manual of the bios ive tried switching the "Halt on" setting to ignore all errors, in case it was the AGP slot that was knackered. no effect. Anyone here got any suggestions? Ta.
