Actually, as topics go, I think gun control is almost, if not equally, controversial. I just happen to have a more personal relationship with tobacco compared to guns. Hell, I've never even owned a real gun. I'm sure if I grew up in one of those gun states, I would have different outlook. As things stand though, guns are not really that important to me.
I think though, that the movie would have had a greater impact with tobacco but only if it was made several years ago. Big Tobacco has lost several cases since 1998 I believe. Then there was the $200+ billion settlement with the states. I believe there are additional cases out there too that are currently underway. I think events like that would lower the impact of Big Tobacco as the defendant in this movie.
I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't really comment as to whether the gun control issue is handled well, but I personally would have preferred tobacco as the main issue.
