| DVD's just MPEG2 data anyhow. There's no reason why it has to be limited to 480i - MPEG2 itself can handle streams as large as you like. After all, there's already HDTV broadcasts going on in MPEG2.
Mind you, Japan already has Blueray recorders, so that they can record HDTV channels.
