Laz. | Checking of Hotmail accounts is a feature provided only by Outlook and Outlook Express - M$ have been rather cagey about how they do this. I'm sure some bright spark will find a way to copy their protocol one day 
As for nifty features - add your own. Thunderbird has a load of extensions available: see here
