Give the two areas a good clean with some Isopropyl (alcohol safe for use on PCBs and Chips) You may want to try to lap the sink, this involves using a very flat surface (usually glass, but if you can get use of a cast iron mechanical marking out table this is as good as it gets) to get the sink to a mirror finish. this is done by starting with a coarse glasspaper and gradually getting to a very fine grit paper. This process will allow a near perfect contact to the CPU die. Apply the compond thinly and evenly, if you put too much on it will be insulating not conducting! you can get lapping kits from
