Wine and WineX serve a purpose. I don't always want to reboot into on those rare occasions I want to play a game. Besides, it's very hard to "corrupt" linux through normal use - only if you do Something Stupid As Root. Leave spontaneous corruption to another well known and expensive OS

i'm using a voodoo 5500.. is it worth changing to a gf2mx 400, both cards are only directx 7, but much more support in the way of drivers.

It might be - Wine makes a lot of use of OpenGL for its 3D support. The voodoo drivers are pretty limited in this regard whereas the nVidia drivers (and even ATi's drivers if you can get them working) have a somewhat more mature implementation. I think the voodoo drivers actually use Mesa, which is not fast.

tiberian sun wont install :'( complains about some com401 or somethin, cant quite remember at the mo, so i click update, and i get an error: this file does not need updating.. and then it asks to reboot the system (windows system :/)
maybe i will have more luck with Homeworld/homeworldd: cataclysm
I've had Homeworld working, only without any sound. I was using a very old version of WineX though - I think I'm still subscribed to it, and I've no idea what I've done to my WorldPay details... At the moment, though, I don't have a working 32 bit linux so I can't play along atm.

The error with Tiberian Sun is not with the game itself but with its installer. Installers make use of a load of libraries that sometimes work, and sometimes refuse to play nicely - com401 is probably one of these. I remember having real trouble with the installer for Outcast that grabbed and centred my mouse pointer and wouldn't allow it to move...

Try http://liflg.sourceforge.net/ for modified installers for games.
