New network - OS choice and security checking - any advice???

So, finally got BB and today i finally got some semblance of home network working. Couldn't get router to access/store PPP details despite hours of reading up on other directly specific forums - so adandoned it and now using a borrowed system - which needs to go onto the network as an office work machine rather than a server longterm cheapo mb (pcchips gigapro something) with ME and Norton Firewall/AV. So - on the look out for a lower spec system - got an eye on a mates P266 64MB (no hdd at mo so can't test) but had a win 95 OEM disk originally - would this work? Failing this any advice on improving security/admin support would be useful as until now I have only had to keep tabs on them separately. Is it possible with linux to simpy install and expect it to work on its own without much extra input - simply wantingto use it as a dsl server and possibly a HP printer server. Or any advice on using ME or 98 ofr this same purpose would be greatly received.

Anyway, got other PC's (both on XP home) working properly using connection sharing - but turned off file/printer sharing as trying to minimise tile transfers until I know they are secure.

Also I ran shields up on server and my main machine and got the following response:

All service ports?
selection has no Reverse DNS
Solicited TCP Packets: RECEIVED (FAILED)
Unsolicited Packets: PASSED
Ping Echo: PASSED
EDIT: All other tests recieved full stealth reports on my main system

I guess what I am after is a child level approach/lay terms security guide - if theres an easy to follow one out there - can you point me at the site??
