If it is from 1988, it won't be able to handle NiMh!!!!

Trust me, first hand experience. I had a AA charger for NiCad, I bought new NiMH AA's and was too cheap to get a charger. Within 3 seconds, the batteries started making a sizzling sound, and then started to leak.

Usually, chargers that can handle both have a manual switch. Some newer one's manage it automatically. If it is more than a couple of years old, dump it. It's not worth the risk!!
