You've just hit the main problem with that particular distro. It's a total bitch when it comes to doing things like that. Unfortunately i hit the same snag with my installation of ubuntu. In the end i just gave up and went back to slackware. The only thing i could suggest would be to try
www.google.com/linux and search for "ubuntu ati driver install" and trawl through some threads of people with the same problem.
