What is happening is that anything not under the GPL will not be allowed to use GPLonly symbols in the kernel. It will affect much more than nvidia drivers.
For those that need a reference model to work with, there are a couple of select individuals deciding what is best for us in the way we use our computers. (They don't work for nvidia)
Given what I'seen over the last year in Linux and what I expect to see this year, my avatar will most likely change. I wouldn't be testing Vista if I didn't feel it may turn out to be a better alternative. |
I was unaware of this GPL only turn. That is unfortunate. As much as I like FOSS, there is nothing wrong with for-profit software. And it sounds like that is being threatened unnecessarily...I hope for the best, as I am enjoying Linux a great deal.
Side note:
I just installed the nvidia proprietary drivers no problem on my sig rig in Arch. 3 commands:
pacman -S nvidia
nvidia-xconfig
reboot
I could've gotten away without reboot, but it would've been more complicated than it was worth.
