You can already buy HD-DVDs on the cheap, e.g. 3 for £20.

However, if your HD-DVD player fails to work in the future, and you can't replace it, you'll have a whole load of movies you can't watch.

Backing-up HD-DVDs to a hard drive would be some tedious task with each movie being 15GB or larger.
