| If you have some work to do I would do it first before trying this, that way it case it breaks again you don't have to reimage.. It's an easy fix we just have to find where it thinks the OS is now.
Do your update and if it fails to boot type this at the grub prompt hitting the "enter" key after each line
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-13-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-13-generic
then hit the b key
