They'll sell at that price when used in some specialised commercial purpose.
It's cheap compared to how much cutting edge hardware used to cost in the 1980s.
I worked on a system for data archiving, using the first writeable optical drives. The drives alone cost about $5000 each, and we had no trouble finding customers!
