I tended to find their efforts to be hit-or-miss. That's why I used the expression "off kilter" above, they were usually reaching deeply into the land of the absurd and that's far from mainstream Brit humor, "Red Dwarf" was kind of uneven too, but it's quirkiness was part of the appeal. If you ever have the opportunity to check out "Have You Been Served?", definitely do -- it's a true classic.

"The Avengers" embodies a healthy dose of Brit humor -- plots, sets and dialog. My favorite has always been the Mrs. Peel episodes, but that was partly due to Dianna Rigg ! But that's really a different flavor of show (spy Vs spy -- as is "The Prisoner"). The more mainstream shows deal with more real-life characters in more real-life situations. Truly excellent writing!
