go with socket 939 because you can do dual channel ram and you can also used cheaper unregistered unbuffered ram. The socket 940 is only staying server side for the optetron line from AMD. 939 is the newer and technology that will be supported for desktops. all the following are 939 cpus: 3500+ for $450, 3800+ for $650, FX-53 for $900. The following are now 940 cpus: FX-53 $800.

also you will want to get a motherboard with a Nvidia N-force3 250 Ultra chipset for the most features.
