gigabyte coolers aren't bad but I would recomend either the Zalman CNPS7000B-CU or the ThermalRight XP-90, and if you have the space for it the ThermalRight XP-120 but this doesn't fit all motherboards

It might help if you told us what mobo you are using. Might help just a little.

What about the Zalman CNPS7700-Cu. I think that and the Thermalright XP-120 are the current HSF champs.

the zalman 7700-Cu is really heavy, I've heard it bends the motherboard I would recomend the 7700-AlCu instead

I'm currently using the CNPS7700-Cu, and I'm here to tell ya, it's not a very good cooler. My FX55 hit 60C a couple of times with this cooler. GrahamGarside is correct when he says it's heavy. It's close to 2 lb's , although I haven't noticed if it's bent my mobo. And imo, it's an ugly peice of kit. And I also have to mention that it presses against the retention mechanisim on the Artic Cooling VGA Silencer Revision 3. So although it may be quiet, it doesn't have the cooling power to keep my temps down. The FX55 puts out 103 watts of heat at 1.55 volts.

The reviews I have been reading on the Swiftech MCX6400-V have all been outstanding, even when it's coupled with a medium flow fan. I am awaiting one from Sidewinder Computers in the US, and will be using a Delta screamer fan with it. I hope to be able to keep the temps under 50C with this new setup. This heatsink can supposedly dissipate up to 130 watts of heat with a high flow fan. The delta screamer I have pushes around 65 CFM at around 45db. Not for folks with sensitive ears

I just don't know if air cooling can cut it now...

mate never mention the word "leak" around a watercooling enthusiast: it results in a long winded speech about just why leaks dont happen...

have you looked at the gigabyte 3d rocket cooler pro. its not the most expensive HSF and isnt quite in top end thermalright range but its reasonably quiet, reasonably priced easy to install, very very close to the top thermalrights and most importantly its got LEDS =)

the rocket thing where it blows air over your NB heatsink is a cool feature too.

i took my active cooler off and put a good copper passive cooler on my abit AV8 northbridge and it runs alot cooler now with the gigabyte coolers air blowing over it than it did with the HSF thing on it.

with a good water cooling setup the chance of a leak is no greater than the heatsink popping off or a fan breaking down

thats been the thing thats put me off watercooling so far. Plus with these coolers that allow 120mm fans you can get just as quiet a system with air unless you're using a passive radiator
