It will lock itself down after the trial period. You should still be able to retrieve any data afterwords, via another OS. Word is that end of Q2 it might be released.

As it's only a beta preview in will stop running after that time, at which point you will need to install a full os
if we're lucky we should see it this year but don't hold your breath

I tried it already...could not get everything working, so deleted that partition. According to the rumour mill, we will probably see some sort of W64 at the end of May, and this has been reinforced at CES, which is running as we speak. I've played with the new GUI, but DirectNext needs some work yet, and that's being nice.

What I do know for sure, is that alot of companies have halted development of 32-bit drivers and are rushing to get 64-bit ones out, ever since the beginning of December. There has been little success tho, and it makes me wonder what will happen when DirectNext comes out...

I'm assuming that once the retail version is released our beta versions will stop working as if by magic.

Any idea if W64 will include the DEP functionality in it? (And yes, I know that, for it to work, the processor must support DEP)

Given that AMD's 64bit processors introduced the NX flag (on x86 at least), one would hope that MS bothered to use it...

it's the same with any new technology, the hardware first then software
anyone who remembers back to 386 days will tell you it took an age for a 32bit windows for the consumer
the fx is still pretty much the fastest 32bit chip as well i might add and unless you are doing media encoding, compression, encyrption etc.. you won't see the massive differance that 64bit can make, games for the time being are graphics card limitted

you should also run both regular xp and the 64bit side by side as xp64 isn't stable or supported enough yet to run alone
there are several linux distro's that run perferctly well in 64bit mode, I'm sure Kaitain would love to tell you all about them

I think we can be sure that the beta will not expire until the full-version is released, which will almost certainly be this year.

A 64-bit FX chip is damn fast regardless of whether it is running 32 or 64-bit. This is the new AMD road anyhow - forget 32-bit chips they will soon be dodo's.

With Windows XP x64 RC1 (build 1289) being publicly released at the end of this month (we hope). XP x64 should be released in the first half of this year. the one thing about XP x64 is that there is no upgrade its clean installs when the final release comes out. So even if you have a beta version youll have to delete it.

Only thing is Windows XP x64 will only be distributed as an OEM product. there will be no box or manual.

As for Intel, rumor is that thier newest chips already have the 64 bit buiilt in, but of course its not enabled. we have had people trying to unlock it through bios updates but no success yet.
