It's coming soon!

I just found out today that I may be actually selling one of my old comps to a friend here at work for a whopping $400! It's pretty much exactly what I got in it, so it should be a pretty good sale.

With that $400, I will be purchasing a 90nm 3500+ and an EPoX 9NDA3+. I already have the RAM and Video Card and hard drives to throw in the sucker, so I was wondering what everyone else thought of my selection? I managed to find these two items for about $412 or so and I am definately looking forward to the upgrade to 64. If anyone has any ideas about what I should go for, let me know! I'm open to alllll kinds of suggestions.

Later on I'll be getting better RAM and two more Raptors to throw into the setup, but for now I've got 1Gb of matched dual channel Samsung memory, a 6800 ultra, and two 36gb WD raptors that are going into RAID0.

I know the feeling. My system is coming together. Albeit ALOT dam slower than I had anticipated. Slowly but surely.

Lol. My PSU is still in the mail apparantly, and the ram was just released for sale yesterday. It's goona be a while before i get this system all done too...but at least it gives me the time to plan things out...rather than getting everything...slapping it together, and giving it a go...this way i get to test each part to it's fullest(or at least that's what I keep telling myself).

Can't wait to see both of your benches!

Personally I would recomend a 3200+ or even just a 3000+
the performance differance just doesn't warrant the price differance in my eyes and they'll still overclock anyway

Hrmm, Graham, I've considered the same thing. Unless I went all the way up the line and got the 4000+ there didn't seem to be any big difference, but for some reason the 3500 caught my eye. I may consider that advice and go with it. If I can get retail and not have to frick with a hs/f for awhile, I'll hold off on the overclocking.

See if you can pick one up on OEM. You'll save a few dollars that way.

remember not to go too far down the lineup in case you get a good overclocker that is limited by your multiplier. most 3000s are good ocers but cant get a multi high enough. 3200+ has the same problem, though not quite as bad.

3500+ gives u all the multis you need but at a premium so if you have the money its worth it but make sure you get a winchester. else get a 3200+

low multi wouldn't matter if you have good ram though, invest in some good TCCD ram with brainpower PCB, if you hit a good clocker, you saved the difference in a 3000-3200 to a 3500, and you got more fsb out of the deal. But do they make 90nm procs below 3500? i thought they were only the lower end a64's(and by lower end a64's i mean fast as hell chips )

the first 90nm chip was the 3200+, then the 3000+, then the 3500+. the 3500+ is still about 40% 90nm 60% 130nm by the sounds but the 3200 and 3000 are all 90nm only. even with good ram its an issue. 300fsb isnt that easy to get unless you have a good/lucky board. if you are stuck below 300, you have problems. People that have done serious mobo modding have had winchesters running speeds far in excess of 3Ghz using extreme cooling but you can only push your fsb so far. as someone who has sworn at one of these chips for an extended period of time i can say the extra money for extra multis is worth it. as long as its not too much

most online specialist retailers specify if it's a winchester or newcastle

If your looking at overclocking, it is simple enough to get a 3200+ to run at 2442mhz, stock its 2211mhz.

dsio: i got my system as high as 2442mhz the other day, 222x11 :P On a stock cooler. I dropped it back 210x11 when i saw the temps though.

Argh! I don't know how the bios works for the 64 chips. Overclocking will be a whole new adventure in itself. It will be like the first time I fricked with a P4. Lol.

not that complicated really, only thing differant to consider is the HT bus ratio and also not to expect memory to behave the same as it does on an intel system
