Thanks, Daniel. I didn't know that the ocean leapt or bounded. Very little experience of the sea.

The ocean bounds, I know that for a fact. But I've never seen it leap. Perhaps it only occurs to the bravest sailors in the most harrowing of waters?

Yarr, maybe it's only the saltiest of dogs that get to see the ocean leap. Once when crossing the English Channel it went from three foot to twelve foot swells inside of a minute or two. Most of the people on the ship were miserably seasick. I was nearly impervious to motion sickness as a lad, not so much now.

Really a matter of how we thnk of theses thing...I think... A wave has leaped at me and near drown me before I made the shore...but I wouldn't have spoken of it in those words...bounding does come more naturally to mind..

It's as if the sea must remind us that it's bigger, badder and more... dangerous than we are. Yes Mother Nature, you win! We'd be so much better off if we'd keep that in mind.

I saw a pic of the storm surge in Mississippi that came with Katrina. Holy mudda of God, thirty feet tall. I don't know if the pic was doctored, it's possible.

I didn't understand what created a hurricane's storm surge. I thought it was simply the huge waves that come with these storms. The decrease in atmospheric pressure allows the ocean to rise. This plus the waves is frightening to behold.

Well, they did tests, and the atmospheric pressure alone was not enough to raise the water 20 feet. The pressure could only really raise it a few feet...apparently such great winds over such a large area cause the water to 'pile up' when met with a barrier such as land. This is how I understand it, at least, and there are probably others that are far more knowledgeable.

I wondered how lessening the atmospheric pressure could raise the ocean that much, water being 800 times more heavy than air. Whatever the true cause of a storm surge, I hope to never witness a category five hurricane, even from a "safe" distance.

Don't worry! If you are ever in hurricane, I hear the government has an excellent plan on how to keep you safe
