A 1 Gb Asus 5570 Vidcard for $94, 4 Gb of Kingston DDR3 for $118, 500 Gb Seagate @ $56, a 650W Antec Earthwatts for $88, AMD Phenom II 3.1 Ghz @ $104, Asus DVD-RW @ $37, Win7 64-bit Home Premium for $115, the $56 Asus AMD3 Micro ATX mobo and three 120mm aluminum case fans for $14 each.
Would have saved maybe $70 from Newegg or Tiger Direct, but I wanted all of the parts here and now.

I spent ~$1100 for the last P4 box I built. I guess this is progress.

It's a great relief not dealing with a box that requires four boots to get its act together. And letting the thing restart on its own was extremely time consuming, it took an hour and forty five minutes for the three reboots a few days back. Life in the dual-core lane is far more satisfying. Plus, I'm on the sunny side of the street again, go AMD!

Life in the 64-bit lane agrees with me. So far, no 32-bit software clashes at all, including an eight year old MS game. Yay!

Thanks Daniel, me too! The old A-Box protested being asked to wake up, big time. It was extremely tired, I know the feeling!
The new machine likes running, yay!

Cool running processor and mobo, two 120mm's running very quietly. What do I gotta do to get some noise around here? Kidding, I had screaming fans for five years, my ears are still ringing. Oh, that's the tinnitus, nevermind.

The aliens will come and perform unpleasant experiments on you--however, if you send me a PM requesting an official AOA case badge just like the one adorning my new $110 case, I will intercede with them, thereby preventing the outrage. Don't thank me, just send me a PM!

Well motherbleep me Buckwheat. My new box insists on seeing my old IDE HDD as a Master and first in boot order, no matter where it's installed on the ribbon or how it's jumpered. And it lost the IDE ROM DVD drive in BIOS in the process as well. What's a mother to do? Why not put the old hard drive back into the old machine and see if it'll boot? There's irreplaceable info I badly need on the old HDD. Grabbed the jumper on the back of the old ATA HDD with a toothpick to change it back to Master, zing into the air it flew. Good luck finding the tiny piece of black plastic. I simply can't find the little pill bottle holding my spare jumpers, both IDE and SCSI. Whee, happy day!
Complain, complain.

I found the missing jumper in my shirt pocket, amazing. The Olde Girl, TM will not boot, no matter what. Oh well. If I can use a machine that has a Floppy drive and a USB port, my bacon may be saved.

The way that little piece of black plastic appeared the next morning in my yellowed toilet bowl was magic. Looks like I should upgrade the quality of my "magic!"

Anyone in Seattle have a machine with both a Floppy drive and a working USB port? It would help save a book that I wrote years ago. If it's gone it will be a tragedy, admittedly of a personal nature.

Whew, my pal came through for me large time. My Southeast Asian memoir is now on the new HDD and a new flash drive as well. The ten year old floppies worked fine. Let's hear it for old tech!

There is no way that I could write the thing properly again because old details slowly evaporate from the brain. In some cases that's a good thing!

Those "they" people cause a LOT of trouble in this best of all possible worlds. Thank goodness that we can blame "them!"

"Ling Ting Tong from China, Long Tall Sally from Carolina." You are entitled to a free case badge from AOA--even if you can't identify the lyrics. PM me, already!

Liquid nitrogen applied to the skin can smart a bit. The good news is that ugly little patches of imperfect skin can disappear almost overnight.

An imperfect world? Why isn't that "unperfect?" Kinda like flammable and inflammable? Or not.
