It's official, Duron RIP

AMD channel partners are now being told this is the last quarter for Durons. Not a big problem for AMD, as they can squeeze a Tbred in to the same 80 square mm die, and not really so bad for cheap PC buyers either as the 1600+ is so dirt cheap. But still, I'm saddened to see the little guys go.

Thank you for this news, dimmreaper.

Sniffle. Durons have served me well. Imagine my pleasant surprise when my Duron 850 spanked a P3EB 733 in the Big Three Sandra benchmarks. Even with the 33 Mhz FSB advantage, the Intel processor just didn't have the moxie.

Many of the 1 Ghz Duron's are said to be good OCer's. Get one while they're still available.

I've quite loved my Duron 1 gig that will do 1.33 ALL DAY long. (fsb set to 133)

I have had only Duron and I had the same experience that Robbie
did. I put a 1Ghz Duron in a cheap future power kt266 mobo with no o/c features, set the jumper to 133 fsb and it booted right up and has been running happily ever since

Och, aye. Friendly little chips o' glass they are. And disturbingly tiny, too. Careful application of AS and the HS is called for. Every square millimeter of the top of the slug counts.

Hey, does that mean my 5 Durons are now officially "collector's items?"

Not yet but they will be someday.
They will be collectors items just like my IBM PR233.
It's currently collecting dust.

Yep, had to give tribute to a value CPU that could. The Duron 700 in my other box has been running 933 (133 FSB) for almost two years now. At that speed, it kept abreast with my primary system which was then a P3 1.13G.

Any chance they're gonna drop in price even more? :P

Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a cheap one and a cheapish board for a folding machine. Got a spare box lying around with nothing in it.... needs to be used!

How true. But at $29 for a Duron 900 @ Googlegear and $51 for an XP 1600+ at Newegg you can't really ask for any cheaper.
