Shims??????

A couple of questions

1) Do you or anyone you know use CPU shims for your AXP's?

2) If not have you or anyone you know cracked a AXP core installing or removing a heatsink?

The reason for asking is I use a Global WIN CK-38 HS, Which weighs 586 grams with a 80mm Delta  and it's held on by one clip. I have removed and re installed it several times with no problem but, I have had a few people tell me I need to put a shim between the two to help support the weight . Anyone got anything to add pro or con shims?

I've never used a shim and I don't know anyone who does. Usually, the little pads on the processor do good enough of a job. I do know of someone who has cracked a core removing and replacing the heatsink. Good thing it was only a Duron. If your HSF is that heavy, I wouldn't think a shim was out of line. Just make sure it doesn't get in the way of good contact with the CPU.

Shims have been largely dropped as they have been shown to actually trap heat behind the processor.. I use to use then, two years ago but have stopped.

NO..... and they trap heat and can crush cores........

If a shim is supporting the weight of the CPU then its pushing the heatsink away from the core, this is a very bad thing...

Ive never used a shim, and ive never crushed a core.
The only advantage of a shim is that it may help prevent you rocking your cooler on the core chipping the sides. If your carefull and have the four foam pads in place then you wont have any problems.

Plus a bent or shim of incorrect thickness may prevent your getting a good core contact, giving you higher temps.
