AMD Mobo Buying Advice Please.

So the TBred B's caught my attention and I am thinking of taking another ride on the AMD train. Been about a year since I hopped off and I have kind of lost track of what is going on so I need some help picking a new board. I would like something that will last a while this time. My criteria in order of importance:

1. Stability especially over 180FSB without modding. I have the ability to mod but prefer to not mod if I don't have to.

2. Holes for waterblock, seems like I have heard of some boards not having them or not having them right. I have to bolt a waterblock to the board.

3. Not a total pain in the ass to set up, ie conflicts and such

4. Price $100 or under

5. Onboard lan would be nice but not necessary. Onboard sound is not necessary unless it sounds better than Audigy and raid is not necessary.

I would like to hear from owners of different boards and the experiences you have had with them. Thanks.

8RDA. No LAN, crappy sound, but everything else you ask for at a very reasonable price of $88. If you want LAN and Audigy comparable sound, an 8RDA+ for $112. In addition, there's a hella lot of info on these boards in the EPoX section so if you run into any problems, someone over there will be able to help. BTW, I have both and haven't had any problems with either one and they're both running over 200FSB out of the box with air cooling.

Thanks MD, are you running those in dual channel or single channel DDR? If in dual, do you see much performance gain?

I tend to agree with Mooky, if I were to get a new board today it would be an 8RDA or 8RDA+.

You'll like the Tbreds I'm sure.

Both of them are currently running single channel. Single stick of 512MB XMS.

From what I gather, there's only a minor gain from running dual channel. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 3% or so. When running dual channel, the bottleneck is no longer the memory getting to the NB, it's the NB interface to the CPU.

Its probably past your budget but 8RGA+ might be worth looking into.

no need to do a VDD mod and power regulation from the 12v line will *probably* make it a match for a modded 8rda+

Dual channel dosent make a hugh difference in benchamrks (2-300 3dmark2001) appart from sandra memory.
It does make the system "feel" faster somehow, maybee thats just the extra 256mb of ram....
If you can do dual channel then go for it... 2x256 is a much better buy than 1x512.

there is also the new rev-2 abit nforce 2 that many people are wetting there pants over, I havent seen anybody with one yet.... so you might be in for a long wait..

Jus 2 tics off topic here...however...enlighten me on this...with 2 sticks of ram...isn't the latency twice as long...

Thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it.

I already have a good 512Mb stick of ram, so I guess I don't need to double it.

Holst, what is the 8RGA+ and is it in the retail channel yet?

I figured you guys would lean towards Epox, the last one I had was an 8K7A, one of the best AMD boards I ever had.

Abit has never made me "wet my pants" but they have pissed me off a few times when they quit working.

Thanks again everyone.

The 8RGA+ is the EPoX nForce2 board with onboard video. The video is comparable to a GF4 MX400. If you don't need high end video, this may also be a viable option. I believe it is available in Europe right now, but it hasn't hit the US yet. It should be available very soon. Price will probably in the $140 area.

I have two computers....well kinda class it as one now cuz the other is disused and kinda old.

My old specs :

MSI Mobo
Intel @ 480
256 RAM
A tiny 6gb HDD
ATI 128 Pro
LAN, SOUND, 56K Modem....

Not much there, i dont know too much about it. Obviously since i didnt build it and all. But, My current computer (in the other room, waiting for its router to be delivered so i can get on the net with it) is just so much better, i think that Epox and AMD are just such a good combination...for a first time PC builder, It was just extremely easy to put together and set up. The only regret I have buying my 8K5A2+ is that it does'nt support 8X agp (supports up to 4X).....which i would absolutley love to have one day, but i guess i'd have probably built a new one by then anyways.

My New Specs :

Chieftec Dragon Midi Case - Black (Gun metal grey it turned out)
Epox 8K5A2+ (Onboard Lan + 6 Channel Sound)
AMD Athlon XP (Tbred) 2200+
Seagate Barracudda 7200rpm 80gb HDD
Geforce3 ti200 (128mb, Tv-out)

The Geforce card is great, it really is for what i paid for it (Approx £60-£70) but I hope to upgrade some day to something which kicks its backside...although my range could be quite limited only going upto a 4x of course.

But yeah anyway, Epox + AMD = :-D

Ok, I bit. Got an 8RDA+ and a couple of XP 2100's from different weeks on the way. Always good to have a spare just in case. everything should be here by the end of the week so wish me luck and I will make sacrifices to the Overclocking Gods.

Update: My 8RDA+ came in yesterday (Thursday) along with my XP 2100's. One XP is a green week 49 and the other is a brown week 48. So far I have only run the week 49.

I have to say that so far I couldn't be more pleased. With Kingston HyperX Pc 3500, I am at 200FSB and at most aggressive timings. Started the Xp2100 out at 2200 last night at 1.75V watercooled and now am at 2305 at 1.75V (mbm shows 1.78 avg). This is crunching Gromac proteins without using forceasm so it is solid. Tomorrow I will test the other chip which I expected to be the better overclocker.

The only problem that I had with the 8RDA+ so far is that it didn't get along with my 8500 last night. Was giving me all kinds of booting fits whether it was warm or cold boot. It was booting once out of 20 or 30 attempts. I finally got it running last night I just let it run and today have not had any problems with rebooting. Guess the two just needed to get to know each other, lol. Another crazy thing is that I have not reinstalled Win XP yet, just loaded the drivers from the disk and there are no conflicts and it runs just fine. I will reinstall tomorrow just for safety sake and also some of the benches seem a little off for what I have. That amazed me as just moving a pci card from one slot to another caused my Intel boards to have huge fits.

Just thought I would pass along whats happening here so far, very pleased. Thanks for recommending the 8RDA+.

Edit: Those are MHz I listed above not PR. ie 2305Mhz is what I am running currently.
