New 2100+ to play with (0306)

Just sold my 0301 AIUHB 2100+ which was quite a letdown and bought myself a new one (was lucky to find one actually, the store only had one left and noone else stocks them anymore)

the old 2100+ would barely do 2250mhz with 1.95v (and wasn't prime stable at that either - only lasted 2 mins before prime reported errors)

just whacked the new 2100+ week 0306 in here and i instantly went into the bios, upped the fsb from 133 to 166xdefault multiplier = 2166mhz (2700+) .. i didn't change the core voltage, that was left at default.. it booted straight into windows.. i then primed for 2 and a half hrs to check stability... it was ROCK SOLID !

when i left the multiplier set to default with the previous 0301 chip, if i booted at 166mhz? it wouldnt even post.. it needed 1.65v to post but then it wouldnt even boot past the windows logo screen.. so i upped it to 1.75v .. got into windows ok .. primed for less then 5 mins and gave me an error...

so this chip is *DOMINATING* it aye? ..

got a question for you overclocking gurus though... it seems i have a very VERY top notch chip here, but where to now? whats the best step to take next?

i have so much faith in this chip, i reckon even if i UNDERvolted it from default 1.6v to 1.55v it would still run at 166x13 (xp 2700+ - 2166mhz) and be prime stable...

is 2.5ghz within reach based on my results? what are the best steps to take to aim for it?

cheers,

Ric

Personally, I'd say the chances are 'possible' but not a lock... Most good stepping CPUs seem to max out under 2.5ghz. How you set it up, and the supporting cast of HW will be a big influence as well. What's in your rig? memory, mobo, HSF, PSU?

Interesting.

Well I have always been able to run this rig at relatively high fsb's ... maxing out at 197fsb, i've had 2 cpu's in this rig prior to my new 2100+ and both were @ 197fsb (only the last one had a higher multiplier/mhz

Memory is 2x256 samsung pc2700

Mobo is Epox 8k9a2+ (unlocks tbred multipliers automatically)

HS/F is Volcano 7+ with Artic Silver III compound @ high fan speed

PSU is Antec TruePower 480w

Sounds like you're in good shape. Sounds like the final limitation on speed will come down to the capabilities of the CPU... which is exactly what it should be.

Good luck with it.
