Wowsa. Price drop in Athlon64 ville!

The new Athlon64 3400 is available. This new 2.2Ghz Socket 754 processor makes the Athlon64 FX51 obsolete--- unless Dual-Channel is an absolute must. Whaa? NOT. For $404 as opposed to ~$700 for the FX51...

The Athlon64 3200 dropped to $270. It was ~$410.

The Athlon64 3000 is a sweet $211. All at the Egg.

This leads me to believe that the Socket 754 form factor won't disappear as soon as prognosticated. I hope.

I owned shares so take this with a grain of salt. I bought AMD in 1999 and follow the market....
The tech sector is bloated again, and the fluctuating AMD share prices are more a sign of the volatility in the market than it is in AMD's performance. Remember, the market has known about A64, A64FX and opterons for months. If you look at the charts, September was the big month ($18+) which was soon after many announcements about A64. As such, they have already been priced in (current price ~15.75). Any dramatic news will have to include dramatic increases in profit as a result of the release of these new CPUs.

If AMD is profitable, they will hold the line with Socket 754. It will be the "value" socket for a couple of years. If they abandon it, it will very likely be a signal that AMD is failing to meet plans, since this is an additional platform to support and develop on... ie. it has higher costs but also provide the potential for market differentiation and higher margins on the 939.

My only hope is that 754 will support dual channel. If not, and the 939 stays sky high, I'll be looking at P4s. The last 20 or so PCs I built have all been AMDs....

future builds

Hi,

As a mere earthworm in the computer scheme of things , i`m looking at a new system build next year with a vapochill and an Athlon 64 chip. But woe is me , serious cost !! I dont think I can take my Barton 2500 much further , lol ok i dont really need it performance wise for anything but speed is good

Looking forward to some serious price cuts on those chips , so we can give those 800mhz P4s a run for their money .

G

PS anyone vapochilled one of those Athlon64`s yet ? and what kind of memory goes well with them , up to 3500 ?? or are they suited to PC4000 and higher ?

One last q ..what`s the big deal with the FX51 compared to the Athon64 3400 ? The on chip cache is the same .

The A64 FX51 addresses Dual Channel RAM, but the A64 3400's, 3200's and and 3000's don't. The half size L2 cache of the A64 3000's doesn't have much of an adverse impact on its performance. The A64 FX53 is supposed to be here soon. It'll still be a better deal than the P4 EE's.

Truthfully, a PII 450 would be good enough for me, except for gaming. It's those damned Jones's. They never shut up!

Socket 939 due out in March. It will replace socket 754 rapdily but will be priced much closer to 754, with 940 targeted to the server crowd.
