mATX

for ages, I've wnated to go matx but not EPIA because the processors aren't amazing. There's a few boards around that take Socket A CPUs and I have a spare XP1600 that isn't worth selling, so I thought I might build a mini rig for folding.

Alternatively, I might swap all my parts over and use an AGP board. I was thinking about this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=51523
ECS K7SEM. There were a few bad reviews relating to getting 133/266 FSB and external AGP working but these seem to have been solved with BIOS and driver upgrades. Does anyone know if this board is likely to cope with a Radeon 9700 Pro, what its stability is like, whether its likely to be linux compatible and whether ts easy to overclock (I know it now supports 333FSB so I can always tell it to do that and the multiplier is unlocked on my XP1700)? I heard that these boards are basiclaly identical to the PCchips M810 - in my eperience PCChips are evil and must never be used.

I'll be posting here myself when I do a little more research. Off to a lecture now...

I think the 8rgmi is still available...
Nforce2, built in GF4 MX, and it is overclockable.

I have a PC Chips M810L-R. It is nothing like the ESC K7SEM ver 3.0 but if I remember correctly it is exactly like the origonal K7SEM.

First off an ECS board is not going to overclock very easy. I know about the K7S5A, but that had a hacked BIOS. Back when I bought my board many people were with the ECS board where flashing them with the PC Chips BIOS which allows FSB overclocking.

There seems to be 4 versions of the K7SEM out there.

ver1.0 = KT133 chipset
ver1.0+B1 = KT133A chipset
ver3.0A =SiS730 chipset
ver3.0C = unknown chipset but it doesn't suport 133FBS cpus and it only allows a Duron up to 1200MHz.

Also it is very doubtfull that it would support an ATi 9700PRO. I couldn't get mine to run a Radeon 8500 retail.

i bought it for my 1800+, but i returned it because it would not recognize the processor correctly. it was running at 1.1ghz instad of 1.53ghz

also, the imtegrated video was causing problems with the correction of the clock speed i was trying

this is the thing
i was actually thinking of miniITX being as its so small. But as yet there aren't any that take socket a (there was one announced on miniitx.com i tihnk but its not availible yet). SO I may be headed in the microATX direction as that also makes it a lot easier with graphics cards.

Hey stigweed, how about the new Epox nForce2 Mini Me or a Shuttle nForce2 solution? The Shuttle XPC SN41G2 or SN45G look good. I believe Aedan has had some experience with these, might be worth asking what he thought of it?

Laz.

I'm in two minds on this one. They;re starting to make high end socket A boards smaller, so it might be worth me upgrading the mobo and keeping the processor to take advantage of a more reliable chipset and agp 8x, while at the same time compactifying (my new word) the systtem. Or I could wait a while and go 64bit. The eternal question...

the epox minime is a complete barebons system, I was looking to save money by getting just the motherboard, and maybe a case. I don't like the shape of the shuttle boxes and the minime. Chances are this system wouldn't even have a cd drive. Just HD and network, absolutely minimal. (Tho the idea of minimizing a watercooling system and squeezing it in there sounds like a challenge - I've managed it with my current miditower.SilentDrive + some noise reduction words

It could go two ways: minimal and maxing out the power but using my XP1700+ and rad9700 or completely minimal with just the old XP1600+ and a little RAM to run a few servers (samba, maybe a local web server). I'd probably create my own case to put it in.
