You'd think that the Thoroughbred has to have more L2 cache. So far, the XP 2k+ vs. P4 2.2 Ghz BM's that I've seen do not favor the Athlon XP 2000+. And I don't like that, at all.

Unfortunetly this is what we can expect to see for the rest of the year.

AMD won't pass Intel by performance wise because they can't possibly maintain a performance lead. AMD will gladly take shy seconds, 20% of the market, and an average selling price of $90.

Intel will continue to increase CPU speeds at a turtle like rate, milking every red cent from each new factory rating because they are not under much pressure by AMD to scale faster. Intel knows they can out scale AMD by more than enough to make up for any per-tick performance short falls.

But once Hammer hits the streets we may once again find ourselves(consumers) smack in the middle of both a performance and price war.

Sadly it appears no cahe will be added. However this is probably a sign that the .13 chip scales well enough to not need it.

There is a new AMD roadmapish type article over at the Inquirer now http://www.theinquirer.net/20010201.htm It is a good read.

No problem Super !!!

The part of the article that really tickles me is this:

"changes for Thoroughbred" . . . . "system integrators should be aware the CPUID will be 680h, voltage 1.60V, and PowerNow frequency switching may be turned on"

I especially like that last part about PowerNow. This may be AMDs approach to thermal managment. PowerNow is essentially a way to modulate operating frequency for the sake of saving power on laptops. However it could theoryetically be used in conjunction with the on-die diod and BIOS software to throttle the CPU back when inadiquate cooling is used.

Apparently all Thoroughbreds 2000+ through 2600+ will use 1.6V! This is good for two reasons. One is that probably any board that will run a Palomino will run a Thoroughbred. Second is that if a single voltage can power a such wide spectrum of CPUs it is likely that Thoroughbred is highly scalable(and highly overclockable).

I can't wait till Q2

DUDE!!!! This part I REALLY LOVE!
My XP board handling a thoroughbred, awesome. Actually as a result, I see mb makers making more money off of me. Easier upgrade path to a kick @$$ system - means more spare parts lying a around, to build more machines, lol.

I don't know how close AMD is to SOI and .13 Micron. I remember reading that Chipzilla was having many problems trying to switch to .13 Micron. But that was a few months ago. I can't recall if Satan Clara has gone over to copper interconnects yet.

The scary part of the current CPU war is that the P4 is on top. AMD's saving grace is price. Their second fastest XP is a LOT less expensive than the second fastest P4.

Arrgh. It isses me offpay that Chipzilla seems able to win the Mhz war forever. Joe Blow doesn't know or care about IPC.
