Red face xp-tmc for chaintech ct7aia KT133A

Hithere, I wos wondering ifanyone could help.

Iv got an ole Chaintech CT7AIA0 mobo currently running a athlon 800 (at 880)

the mobo is apparently a VIA KT133A

I have ordered a XP-TMC adapter, which they say will make it possible to put a late model athlon XP in to this motherboard.

My bios can only change the existing multiplier to a maximum of 12 x 100, from what I can gather. I assume i have to set the clock freq in the bios to default and then use the switches on the xp-tmc adapter to set the multipliers.

I have yet to buy a cpu. Can anyone point me in the direction on which one I should purchase. They say use only a Tbreda or Barton on the KT133 chipsets but im not sure why, but I will probably try one.

The main issue im concerned about is they say it will not work if the cpu is locked. can anyone give me some guidence into how i can tell if a new athlon is lockd or not? which processor should I try. I cannot source any mobile athlons here.

Any help would be appreciated as i have searched the net and have a whole heap of conflicting information as to what cpus are locked

Regards
MarkH

hmmm.... have you updated the bios on that mobo? I have a couple of KT133A boards around that will allow a multiplier up to 15, and so will run an XP 2400+ (15x133). I believe the 2400s are all unlocked and are tbred cores, but others may have much better info.

All new Athlons are multiplier locked. If I am remembering correctly AMD started locking them round about week 49 of last year.

So, your best bet is a 'mobile' Athlon - which aren't locked.

I don't know anything about the adapter you mentioned, however.

This company has the mobile chips right now and they do international sales.

If you don't live in the UK the currency exchange rate might be a bit of a killer.

If they do they'll be handing AMD a new lease on life! Can anyone find anything on this revolting development?

Exclamation Custom PC July 2004 (direct quote)

INTEL SNUBS OVERCLOCKERS:
Not content with just locking its multipliers, the intel empire has apprently taken another step to stamp out overclocking by locking Alderwoods FSB above 12% of its specified speed! A leading motherboard manufacturer confirmed the limit to Custom PC, although the companny, which wished to remain anonymous, insisted its was for practical reasons (yeah right) Acording to the company the new 16bit PCI Express will hang if FSB is taken beyond 12%, "while most new VGA cards cant tolerate such a high bus speeds" Some have speculated that the limit might also be related to intel's overclocking detection circuits, which was patented in march 2003 (see patent number 6,535,988 at http://patft.uspto.gov, although intel denied the link as rumor and speculation.

She runs sweet

No problems she runs fine.

A little slower than what I thought in the benchmark - 6400 on 3dmark 2001

from 5000 with the athlon 800. I put it down to the slow memory speed.

I might try to tweak her up a we bit more.
