Athlon XP 2000+

Are these things supposed to run like hotplates? I have an old one that I'm using with a KT333 chipset by Epox, and I'm using arctic silver 5 w/stock heatsink. Idle temps are around 50c+ at the default 1.65 voltage, and at default speeds. Under load it can climb all the way up to 65c+ and sometimes higher. I was wondering if this was correct, or if I have somehow damaged this CPU (I have used it a lot in the past, and one time I forgot to add thermal paste before running it about 3 years ago).

It seems to be completely stable though. I folded all night for Team 45 as Quickbeam178 (I use Quickbeam177 for folding on my own rig) and the next morning the system was still alive and folding, albeit I could have cooked my breakfast on the heatsink.

Anyways, just wondering.

I would investigate the airflow in your case and make sure that you are getting sufficient ventilation. The heatsink should not be so hot that you can't touch it unless it is not getting enough air or is just too small for the load.

Yeah, that is somewhat accurate. My mate has got one the same as you. It runs at load at 74c. And about 55c at idle. With average case ventilation. AMD 2000+ stock coolers arent worth much. To be blunt...AMD 2000+ stock coolers suck ass....BIG ASS!

Oh, good then. I only asked because it seemed odd, but I have heard about how the earlier Athlons have had bad stock cooling and high temperatures.

I stand corrected. Thats happening an awful lot lately.

They are pretty robust chips, so I wouldnt stress. We used a 2000+ for several hours without any case fans, and the CPU fan not plugged in. But the side panel was off. While I wouldnt recommend this, it didnt do it any harm.

I was about to say that the cooler that came with my 2400+ worked just great - then I realized it did, on a Duron 1000 :P.

LoL. Yeah, a Duron 1000 would probably almost run on passive cooling. :P

Do these "stock" coolers that you guys are refering too come with the copper slug in the middle of them?!?! I think those are alot better then the one's that don't have the slug.

Yes the cooler that came with my 2100 Palomino was better than earlier versions and had thin fins, but was all aluminum, Earlier Palomino coolers were also all aluminum, but much thicker fins. the old ones were bad the newer better and then they started to come with the copper core, better yet, (came with my XP2600) as good as many aftermarket air coolers.. Vantec makes a cheaper copper cooler (6040H) that is respectable and fairly inexpensive most places. It has a three lug fastener that you can hook up using thumb power instead of a screwdriver too, and it will fit all Socket A boards I have seen (Unlike my Zalman 7000).

Yeah, my stock Palomino 1700+ used to idle around 52 C until I put a Volcano cooler on it. The stock coolers just suck.
