Weird Duron 800

I bust my Abit KT7E a few weeks ago so I decide to upgrade to an MSI KT7 266A PRO 2 A with 2565meg PC2100 DDR ram. All was fine until I made a slight mess of my water cooling and cooked the duron, TWICE!!!
Most of the time the mobo reports that the processors is nackered, but sometimes it will boot and work fine. I've checked the duron and there is visible charring on it but I can work out why it will run fine but sometimes not at all.
Any ideas??

Most of the time it wont boot at all. Its only rarely does it actually start up.
When I say it doesnt boot, I mean it doesnt even show the post screen it just locks at the CPU test and beeps 4 times. Which my mobo manual tells me means that the "cpu initialisation test failed"
So, ideas??

Maybee there isa bad contact somewhere.

Try reseating it and clean the socket and CPU pins.

I had a squashed duron that would work intermitantly..in the end I binned it and bought another.

its a good thing durons arnt too expensive..ideal watercooling guinee pigs.

Lightbulb Try mounting an air-cooled heatsink

loop: You implied, but didn't state, that water managed to get at the Duron chip. If it did, the suggestions from surlyjoe and Holst make sense. However, if you accidentally ran the Duron without water flowing through the waterblock, you might have inflicted some thermal-related expansion or contraction in the packaging. If you have a regular air-cooled heatsink, try putting it on the Duron and fire it up. The different contact patch / mounting clip might change the stress levels in the packaging enough to make it run again. I figure it's worth a shot, if you have a heatsink / fan lying around...

I havnt got any water on the duron

1st time i didnt have waterblock on straight and it cooked. (but it worked straight away afterwards)

2nd time no water flow and more cooking. (didnt work right afterwards.)

The weird bit is the sometimes perfect operation of the PC. Most of time it wont boot, but sometimes it boots fine and I can use PC like there is no problem.

I suggest you try underclocking it (and possibly undervolting it too) just to see if that gets it up and running stabley and consistently. You may have turned it into a perfectly functional Duron 600, which is a lot better than nothing.
