Overclocking

Say when i purchase an AMD Athlon 3700+ CPU, and if i decide to overclock it, the Operating frequency rises to 2.6 or 2.7 Ghz instead of 2.2. Will overclocking reduce the life of the processor? I'm not really all that clear on overclocking, as ive never done it before.

Can overclocking reduce the lifespan of a cpu? If it is done properly-ie voltage kept under control and temps not allowed to be excessive, it might shorten the life span a few percent. What usually kills a cpu is heat. If you keep the cpu cool, you shouldn't have any worry.

you guys are experts it seems like at comps so do you guys think i should OC my Athlon 64 3700+ with 2 gigs of ram and a 7800 gt (256 megs) video card and with a Serial ATA HD? It will be used for like 60% gaming, 25% office apps and then the remaining 15% for internet, chat and msn

Only if you find that it seems slow which I think would be hard with that setup. But I would overclock the 7800 for sure!

The main parameter is Vcore.
So if you don't increase the default Vcore your CPU will live for years....
But a terrible cooling can also destroy a CPU running at defaults.

Well this is an overclocking forum....

If you can afford it get some decent water cooling:
Dangerden CPU copper waterblock
Dangerden GPU copper waterblock

Copper heatercore, from an autoparts store, should be able to find one for around $20

decent pump, t-line, cap, tubing, water additives, fans, etc

put it together, overclock and run.

It will reduce temps, and increase CPU and GPU lifespan, so then overclocking it will reduce lifespan back to normal (confused yet? )

try looking at this guide for watercooling.
