I've just come home from a wedding party... and I'm drunk!

But the main theme here is an Athlon XP 2500+ I popped into my son's PC this week.

The mobo is a Soltek sl-75FRN2-L and I had a Duron 1.8@2250MHz fsb 166 on it running bullet proof with kingston value ram dual channel DDR400.

I seat and meanwhile back... penny lane there is a barber...

I had the chance to trade the applebred Duron for an Axp2500+ don't know the stepping and I don't really feel like taking the HSF off... now... but the HSF is good stuff... thermaltake heatpipe plus a 9mm quality fan... can't remember the brand... and I'm sure not gonna open the case to check that right now...

but I had to give it 1.725v at 195fsb 2136MHz so it won't crash in 3d games...

prime95 torture gets an error in less than 1 minute...

how much more Vcore can I feed this beast to reach fsb200 safely? (that's the objective).

Should I retrieve my trusty old duron or stick with the Axp2500?

What's better? Duron 2250MHz 166fsb or AXP 2136MHz 195fsb?

I just realized I took 45 minutes to write this post...

but if I had gone to bed I'd have puked so...

by the way, MBM5 is giving me these readings:

case 35c | cpu diode 44c | cpu socket 39c

Dude, go to bed... don't make any decisions in your state.

Given good cooling, standard barton 2500+ will vary greatly by stepping. Anything from 1.7v to 1.90v will be necessary.

I'm thinking the XP is going to perform better across the board tha the Duron, even 100mhz slower.

2.0v for an xp, with suitable cooling, is no biggie.

I can vouch for that. Until my water-block disintegrated, I was running 2.2v Vcore on my XP with no problems.

Click on the link to the Direct-Die Water Block in my siggy, go to the 5th page. About halfway down (95th message, I think) is the tale of what happened to my water block.

Oh come on, live a little.

When I first built my Abit NF7-S, with a T-Bred B 1700+ (clocked at 1466MHz) I was going for a 1GHz overclock. That was my goal. I never got over 2438MHz. So close but not quite there. Many a morning I awoke hung over with the side of my case off and my computer not booting.

I'm just glad I never spilled my drink into my puter while clearing the CMOS.

I would think the AXP at the lower clock would perform better than the Duron because of the added cache.

Finally I sobered up and got the thing working

Can you believe the difference a fan can make? I had a 90mm 2500rpm fan on the cpu hs and things were rather unstable, I changed it to a Sharkoon SL1 3000rpm 27dB 80mm fan on my Thermaltake pipe 101 heatsink and now things are running smooth.

Specs are:

soltek sl-75frn2-l
athlonXP 2500@2205MHz
2x256 GEIL ddr500@400 fsb:ram 1:1 2-3-3-6 dual channel

FSB 200.5
Vcore 1.85 (the board's max)
Vdimm 2.8

cpu temp is 43c idle - 49 load

prime95 still gives errors in less than a minute but games run fine without crashing on a MSI ti4600.
I also put the kingston in my own pc along with another 1Gb kit for a very nice 1.5Gb (nfsmw loves it!) and put the GEIL in this pc.
Now isn't this a cool system for my 4 year old kid to play racing games and for the wife to browse the web and check email? Heck, even I have been playing some games on this "secondary" system
