AMD FX-60 Dual Core

AMD have finally released the last Socket 939 chip, in the form of the FX-60 dual core.

While the X2 series have brought dual core to the desktop market, the FX range has remained single core to this point, but the FX-60 changes that with its pair of 2.6Ghz cores, each with 1MB of L2 cache.

The FX-57 will continue to run beside the FX-60 as a single core option for quite some time, but it is doubtfull if any new chips will be out for the S939 platform unless they carry the Opteron or Sempron name.

Anandtech have benchmarks and a full writeup here http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2668

Its a matter of wank factor.

Many people here could take down any Alienware top of the line given the same budget, but being able to say that a machine is powered by the fastest chip on the planet is a selling point.

it's also rather interesting to note the 3800x2 in the quake 4 test was only 4 fps behind the fx60 meaning when other games go multithreaded those who have the cheaper x2's will be able to keep up with those who paid over double. lol

Very true. Cache is not the holy water that it is for Intels on an Athlon 64 machine, so any gain from the 1MB L2 is minimal at best. The fact is if I had $200k... I would buy an E46 M3 CSL, then buy an FX60 / 7800GTX 512 setup with the change.

Then I would wave to all of the peasants and wave my FX-60 e-manhood to the adoring masses of beautiful, cuddly, swedish women that quantify any relationship with a man by the cost and performance of the CPU in his gaming machine.

Sorry about the OT but this is just too funny

About the Fx60. It sure is one hell of a chip but looking at the rather soon release of socket (A)M2/F or whatever it will be called, i don't think it's a very good purchase at this time. Unless of course if you get your kicks out of the above quote

I thought it was being released at $1,000. At this price it's a joke. Also, look at the level 1 cache. Typo, Newegg?

right now my PC tlakes down a ALX except in the GPU department since it has dual 7800GTX, however if I put a secound GTX in my pc for an extra $500 I would have spend $2300 as opposed to an $6000(fx-57) alienware.
