I hope they overclock well, and aren't ludicrously expensive. Mind you, I don't know if there are any good overclocking socket 940 boards out there, I always figured they where more geared towards stability?

It is worth noting that several of our members already have 3Ghz Opterons

The 940 platform is for servers, so not really the platform of choice for overclocking. Hopefully, we will see these on S939. Then, some nice overclocks can be had.

Heh. A 3Ghz processor that can o/c well? Man, if one of those get released on Skt 939, I'd buy it straight away.

I doubt it will overclock at all. 3Ghz seems to be the very max for A64/Opterons without extreme cooling.

Assuming that these new Opterons are released in the Socket 939 form factor, will the marvelous situation that you can go the Opteron route for cheaper performance than the AMD FX CPU's possibly exist?

That's the case with other Opterons on S939. But, as Pitch has pointed out, these ones may not OC so well.

I got me one of those. 3.1ghz max air, 3.4ghz on chilled water.

Also note that retailers now carry the old "1xx" 939 series of Opteron, but now must buy in large lots, unlike the small buys that allowed smaller stores to carry the 939 Opterons. Not every 939 Opteron hits 3ghz either...but almost every one that i have seen has gotten over 2.7ghz, which really shows how good some of AMD's yeilds are. It was just a matter of time before this happened.

this is my "safe" air voltage(load temps 38c max on Tt Typhoon by software),
and a short PRime95 run @ 3.1ghz, just for you. Please keep in mind that this is prime-stable, so higher "suicide" screenies have been saved
