R.I.P. Barton 2500+

I can finally say that I killed a cpu by oc'ing it. I had
this cpu on an EP-8K5A2+ for almost 4 years @190fsb
and 1.675v. it folded 24/7 most of that time. it was
also my first AMD overclock on a VIA chipset and I must
thank all here who helped me make the oc a success.
for now I will put a Thorton core 2000 in there to keep
the folding going.

Ron

Not only sad to hear that you lost a CPU but a what was and still is a great CPU. Plus they are getting very hard to come by. I recently aquired a 2800 and a nforce2 mobo and I am cherishing it as if it were gold.....

R.I.P Barton 2500, good news is that after i graduate from HS i will be upgrading and i will be selling my nForce 2 board and my xp-m 2600, which is nicely running at 2.2GHz and could go a hell of a lot faster if i had a better board....slightly off topic, but keep an eye in the classifieds in a few months

So sorry to hear about your loss. I too have a Barton 2500+, the mobile version, and i absolutely love it. It is what i put in my current rig, which is the first computer i built myself, and also my first OC, so i know how you feel about that chip being special. You have my sympathies, may it rest in peace.

I think that I will put it on the dead 8RDA+ (caps) and give them both the
old Viking farewell. off to Silicon Valhalla.
thanks for all of your support in these difficult times.

looks like I flunked basic failure diagnostics. the Barton lives! may be the
mobo. I have more to do before announcing it dead. lately I have been
testing/troubleshooting questionable mainboards with known cpu's and
memory. I get no post, no beeps but all fans on mb headers spin, so I
figure bad board. when the Barton rig failed to post, no beeps and all the
fans spinning, I had a brain fart and pronounced the Barton dead. I tried
the Barton on one of the 'dead' boards and? you guessed it happy post
screen and a quick trip thru the bios and all is good. I 'believe' the old
8K5A2 is, well, I will test some more first.
where the heck is the rubber chicken when you need it?????????

I feel your pain. When a friend gives up the ghost it's hard to bear. But they served well and deserve their moment in the Sun.
What the hell its just another chip that got fried )

Glad to hear your Barton survived! I've got an o/c Barton 2600+ XP-M running on an 8K5A2 (with wired socket) and it's a great box -- my sentimental favorite.

My workhorse is an o/c Barton 2500+ XP-M on an ASRock K7VT6 (my other machines are mostly S939 A64's). The Barton XP-M was the real highlight of the XP series -- kind of like the K6-III+ of the K6 series (also a mobile ).

'wired socket', is that the L12 mod? not aware of the wire trick for VIA as
I thought the wire mod was for nForce.

Works fine for me. Never heard anything about it being limited to a particular chip set. I understand the purpose is to fool the cpu, not the chip set.

You may be thinking of the ability of some nForce chipsets to overide the factory configured clock speed.
