Big AMD Price Drop

AMD seams to have taken notice of Intel's pending Conroe launch, and has planned to completely re-jig their pricing system to compete extremely well, dollar-for-dollar with Intel's new offerings.

Story at DailyTech: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800

Quote:
According to memos recently obtained by DailyTech, AMD will drastically cut prices on its desktop processors after the July 23rd release of Intel’s Core 2 Duo Conroe processors. The memos that DailyTech has secured are between AMD and Japanese system manufacturers and indicate the following price cuts will become effective July 24th, 2006:
AMD Athlon 64 price cuts will receive price cut up to 30%
AMD Athlon 64 X2 will receive price cuts up to 50%
AMD Sempron processors will receive price cuts up to 15%
The memos only mention the AM2 processors; however the AM2 parts are now priced identically with Socket 939 components. AMD has previously indicated that the aim of the AM2 processors was to be price competitive with its legacy components.

Intel already announced that it will also cut prices of its Pentium D and Pentium 4 processors between now and the general availability of Conroe. Conroe benchmarks have recently surfaced with significant performance advantages over Athlon 64, but the largest advantage of the processor until now has been the price advantage. With AMD and Intel in a price war over next generation processors, ultimately consumers will benefit the most.

65nm SOI AMD Athlon 64 Revision G processors are expected to ship this December. The memo also stated that AMD will not publicly announce the price cuts on its processor line until after the Conroe launch to avoid cannibalizing its current sales of AM2 CPUs.

Update from the EIC 12/06/2006: Digitimes is also running a story on this subject, claiming the Athlon 64 3800+ will fall to prices as low as $152, and that a similar performing Pentium D 945 will run for $163 at the same time
We know that AMD's K8 chip as it stands will not compete well with Intel's Conroe, but now, AMD has simply changed hats, from performance leader, to value leader, in an impressive attempt to retain its userbase.

$152 for a 3800+ CPU, and MASSIVE price drops on X2s could mean that Conroe's launch falls upon deaf ears, for all but extreme edition / FX buyers.

As good as they were as performance kings, I sure loved them (as most of the Mobile Barton users do) as the cheap alternative to Intel.

It should be noted that this is on AM2 parts. Those 65nm SOI AM2 chips are going to be absolute little crackers, and cheap as well. Come december, the bottom of the range G revision Athlon X2 is going to be THE overclocker to have, and cheap as chips too.

Price versus performance gain has been the main hold off on me upgrading from my mobile chip...I would have had to spend alot to net a noticable gain...Who knows now....

Well, i've been planning to get a X2 for a while, now i have a perfect excuse! To say the 3800+ X2 is only £190, does that mean it's probably gonna be £95?

Also, i have heard that there's supposed to be some sort of 939 - AM2 converter somewhere.

I've got a ClawHammer 754 3000 in a 8KDA3J Epox, any decent improvement still to be had on this MB, CPU wise? Or have I topped the worthwhile limit with this Board?

Well, depends on how you want the answer?

Do you want the happy, yet unrealistic version...

Or the sad, yet honest version...

You can get a S939 board for $50 now, I guess the prices on these should fall some more soon.

I thought there were issues with running a Turion in a S754 mobo? Something about the BIOS getting persnickety and refusing to boot or something?
