It seems like now or the near future is actually a good time to upgrade, when conroe pushes AM2 proces down, the long upgrade path just makes things more tempting

AMD is confusing us. Thanks, guyz. "S939 and AM2 processors will be available for ~~two months--better buy 'em ASAP." "AMD2 will have a long life..." Which is it, jacka$$es? I'm tempted to buy blue meanie procs because of this horsecrap.

They've never said that socket AM2 was discontinued. What HAS been said is that PARTICULAR AM2 chips were discontinued, within a couple months of them being released. Specifically the 1M cache models, IIRC (Cad, correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes, a whole LOT of AM2 chips. Frankly, that kind of marketing drives my dollar away.

I'd suspect that they're often forced to drop certain CPUs. The fab plants they have now can only produce X number of chips per month.

Takes years to build a new plant.

1mb chips are gone from 939 a64 product line(left in Opteron Flava until 939 fully gone), as well as for AM2(1mb chips moved to Opteron lineas well). It's not like they have fully discontinued making a product...they have merely simplified thier SKU's/

AM2 is new, and will be short lived...kinda...

AM3 brings in DDR3 and HT3 to the mix, while AM2 offers DDR2 and HT 1.5 specs. These are two distinctly different platforms with two distincylt different performance goals...one for quadcore, and one for dualcore. Although this may seem too soon for an announcement, Future plans from AMD are in the wide open.

One more benefit of AM3 is a far better better memorycontroller...and couple with some "old" DDR2, things may be far faster than expected.

The reason for a different socket is memory support...although DDR3 has the same number of pins as DDR2, there don't just swap sockets, unfortunately, however FBDIMM can. Different signalling requires different wiring, and because of FBDIMM's serial interface, only this platform can do it.

SO, if you want DDR2, it's AM2, and if you want DDR3, it's AM3.

Part of the reason that this is being made known now is upgrade paths...with cpu's pin-compatible with the previous generation, upgrades and such can be much easier, and systems can be tailored to a person's specific needs much easier....both now and in the rest of this decade.

Don't forget about AMD's "4x4" plan, with 4 cpu's in two sockets...and now 4 cpu's in the same two sockets.
