AMD: We're Not Manufacturing Motherboards

By Kristen Kenedy, CRN

Advanced Micro Device's acquisition of ATI Technology Monday gives the chip maker a leg-up in maintaining a stable image platform for corporate buyers, but it doesn't mean there will be branded AMD motherboards anytime soon.

Pat Moorhead, AMD vice president of global marketing, offered a "definitive no" when asked if the Sunnyvale, Calif., chip maker would be developing its own line of motherboards as a result of the ATI acquisition."

AMD has always been reluctant to make m'boards. They've only built them when a new CPU needed a mainboard that didn't exist. Funny, it never crossed my mind that they'd be interested in manufacturing m'boards, what they want is ATi's Vidcard capabilities.

"There is no difference, that doesn't make a difference."

He's trying to tell us this doesn't make a difference? I'll abstain from judgement! LOL

Pshaw! I predict that within a year, AMD will be making motherboards. They'll just about HAVE to, if their goal is to make themselves more appealing to 'the corporate market'. The corporate market doesn't always buy from Tier-1 vendors with the juice to roll their own mobo, and when they buy white-box solutions, being able to buy an all Intel mobo will carry weight over being able to buy 'chips by AMD, mobo design by somebody in a garage'.

The chipset is the meat of the design, but the mobo is the sauce for the goose. Without that final piece of the puzzle they really haven't got all that much as far as the corporate buyer is concerned, IMHO.

Deucidly good point, Gizmo! AMD plus ATi's chipset design capability might be just the cat's meow.
