AMD won't have anything new until next year, and thats K8L which is a shared cache architecture design a la conroe.

I'm interested in this too, I don't have much time for games nowadays so see no need to upgrade the GPU, more raw processing power would be good though.

When i looked up i848, it is outdated tech. to me. Its still using AGP for gods sake.

I still have AGP in my rig, a 6800LE AGP, and i am happy with its performance. Its a HUGE step up from my old Radeon 9600se, and for not much money too.....but my next rig will have PCI-E for sure.

I did another wish list at Newegg, this time with a conroe chip, and it basically comes up at about 10$ more expensive than my AMD choices, but is probably alot faster. Hmmmmmm decisions decisions...

Oh dear... That cut deep.

I would go for the bottom end C2D for sure. E6600 is nice and all, but we're all about being cheap, not fashionable, and thats just not the E6600.

And so you know, you may have experience with AMD hardware, but that counts for very little when you use a K8. The intel Allendale Core 2 Duos actually are far closer in usage, setup, and overclocking to Athlon XPs than Athlon 64s are.

Further, you may find a nice Allendale overclocks better than a similar Conroe.

The wishlist i did up was using the 6400 conroe, which i believe is based on the Allendale core.

Are you still entertaining AM2? If you are the check out the DFI INFINITY NF ULTRAII-M2 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard. New Egg has this MB under $100 and alot of OCers swear by it.

That with a 3600+ low power edition would be a nice little cheap overclocker.

The 848 was a reference to GotEPoX's 661FX chipset he is using which is far inferior to the 848.

I too will suggest a medium range 965 motherboard with an E6400 on it. You do NOT need SLI. You NEED a Conroe. A well overclocked Conroe is nearly twice as fast as an FX-62. And I do not mean anything crazy, just a little skill and good aircooling. But since...

I will thoroughly tell you when you are going to build the system and know your exact budget. These things change daily, next week I may have another opinion.

Well, based on all the research i have done it looks like as far as price/performance, the way to go is the conroe E6400. In order for me to get similar performance from an AMD chip i would have to spend alot more money it looks like. As far as games go, how long do you estimate the E6400 would be good for....2-4 years maybe? I have read alot of reports that say these chips easily overclock to 3+ ghz, so i would think that would make them future proof for a while, right?

Mine does 3.2+ on the stock cooler...so I guess that yes, it should be quite future proof.
