AMD's Next Generation Microarchitecture Preview: from K8 to K8L
by Yury Malich

[ 08/22/2006 | 07:36 PM ]

New Intel Core 2 Duo processors took the lead in the processor market these days and AMD has nothing to respond with at this time. However, next year AMD promises to release a Conroe-killer, the CPU based on new K8L microarchitecture. Our newest article is devoted to the details of AMD K8L microarchitecture and how it compares with Core and K8 from the theoretical prospective..... Much more to be read!....

Thanks for the article D~

So basically, according to x-bit, AMD is going to have a hard time producing their Conroe killer design.

I can totally understand why. AMD has their work cut of for them and Intel won't wait for AMD's next design. However a lot of info about the K8L architecture isn't known by the public yet, like their branch prediction units and cache handling. Although it'll have to be pretty good to outperform Intels designs by 2008.

It's pretty much all geek to me. Very interesting though, thanks for posting the article.

As far as I can see, if AMD manage that, and increase their clock speeds, as well as a die shrink, it may put them back on top - or it could just bring them back up to par.

At the moment the only advantage of buying AMD is that they have stated the AM3 CPU's will be compatable with the AM2 socket.

Daniel, I heard it explaned one day and it seems to make sense so I will put here what was said.

If you think of processors like cars;

Intel was like a ferarri - fast and small
AMD is like a people mover - not so fast but more space
Sparc is like a Mac truck.

The data processing is like moving boxes from one site to another.

This meant that AMD would be faster because while it takes longer to go the same distance it could carry so much more than Intel and the total time taken would be less.

Now Intel have changed their Ferarri's for Vans, and they carry more than a people mover but go just as fast and sometimes faster.

This new tech is like AMD becoming Vans with satellites to track traffic and go the faster route.

I personally think they need more than just that for an edge over Intel.

There's a lot in play alright...If "we" can get a reasonable alternative....AMD will have done it's part.
(It's a "Please don't leave us all alone in the dark with Intel, we don't care if you bite!" kind of situation...":O}

Intelophobia. For good reason much of the time, you can feel short of air with the slicker side of the street.
