Upgrade to dual core

Hi all...I haven't posted in a long time, but once again I am in need of the expertise that has become consolidated at AoA

I recently bought a dual core Opteron 165 to replace my Opteron 144 on the socket 939 platform. I run a DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D and was hoping to simply drop the new CPU in. I reset the BIOS before I put the new chip in, but when I went to power on the system nothing happened. No fans, nothing.

When I put the old CPU in, it starts like normal. Did I buy a dead CPU? Or something I am missing? I suppose I'll find out if the CPU is truly dead in the next day or so, when the Socket 939 mobo I ordered for a friend arrives.

Welcome back to the neighborhood, Quickbeam177! I'm not familiar with this particular board. It's a pretty safe bet that it needs a BIOS update while running the old CPU.

That's my bet.
I just did something similiar... 3000+ to an opty165. In my case, I checked to make sure the bios was compatible first. I dropped it in, and it recognized it immediately. To play it safe, I did a restore install of the OS.

What is the stepping of yours? Mine is CCBWE 0551... crappy stepping, only does 2.4 stock.

I have the same motherboard you got and it booted fine with the shipping BIOS (2004 BIOS). I ran it with the shipping BIOS for about two weeks. Your CPU is probably dead. You should return it. But before you return it re-install your CPU to make sure it's not a bad contact.
