AMD's plans for the New York plant

AMD held a press conference last week in Saratoga Springs, New York to discuss it's plans regarding the proposed new plant that they are looking at in the Luther Forest Technology Campus near Malta, New York, and which we previously reported on . What AMD will do has been the source of much speculation, and the US $1.2 billion in subsidies being kicked in by the state of New York has been the source of much gnashing of teeth.

It doesn't quite add up to me.

Wages are higher than elsewhere, which is why these plants are normally built elsewhere. So, NY comes up with a subisidy to counter that cost for AMD. But, then State Senator Joseph L. Bruno claims they will get the money back.

So, where does that "money back" actually come from?

The taxes on the wages earned by the 1,200 new jobs created by the plant, and the taxes on the things those 1,200 new wage-earners will purchase.
