939 upgrade or AM2?

I currently have an opteron 144 (S939) on a DFI NF4-DAGF OC'd to 2.3 GHz (I could probably get 2.5 out of it easily if I tried). My plan back when I got it (December, 2005) was to buy a high-end Athlon dual core 939 CPU to replace it as a cheap upgrade. It seems those are pretty rare, so I've been looking at the opteron 170 as a possible upgrade. The other option is to get a new mobo/RAM and get an AM2 chip, which are actually cheaper and a bit faster, but the cost of the other hardware makes this even more expensive. Opinions? I really wasn't expecting to have to upgrade my mobo, but I might have to since these CPUs are so rare now...

This is where AMD have blundered, they killed S939 too soon.

The 939 board I have must be the best board I've ever had, and I'd sooner not change it.

I can still get a new AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ S939 in the UK.

An opty 185 is still 235...not bad for a monster chip.

My opty 170 gets can get 2.8 Ghz easily, 2.90 with some push and I once get 3.01 but develop a serious heat problem. Asus A8N-32 SLI Deluxe mobo. I love it.

I'd have to agree, 939 still has some legs left yet.

Wait for their next socket? It's not too long off.....upgrading to AM2 from 939 now seems worthless to me.

How so ?
There are no new chips coming out on the platform and no new chipsets either and finding a new cpu will be difficult since AMD has done there best to remove them from existance.

I think he means the existing chips.

I partially agree. Any new system - would be just that. All new

But for an older system, my personal choice was get a cheap X2 and wait a while before upgrading. I change it eventually - but until then itll keep on crawling away in the middle lane, getting in the way of all the faster chips and getting abuse.

I just broke 10k in 3dmark6 today with my OC'd opty 175 and an OC'd 8800 GTS. I'm quite happy with this chip and don't think I'll have to upgrade it for a few years still. The read/write memory speeds on the 939's are awesome of you can keep your ram clocked high as well. I agree on the 939>AM2. I'll wait for the next one thanks.

I'm pretty lucky on both chip and video card, as the 175 is a great stepping @3.02 GHz and 1.54 voltage and the 8800 hit 625/1900 overclock. Not the easiest overclocks to get with this hardware, but it is possible. I'm still having lots of fun with the 939 system.
