AgenaFX to breaks 30K in 3DMark06

Just saw this on the inquirer...

AMD's 3GHz K10 to break 30,000 3DMark06

The current record for 3DMark06 is held by shamino at a little over 27K

Quote:
1. 27039 Shamino & Kinc Mushkin OC Team live at GC 2007 ASUS Blitz Extreme
2. 26847 k|ngp|n NVIDIA 8800 ULTRA SLI
3. 26084 *mICKEYmOUSE* SilverStonetek/Asustek Powered
4. 26008 hipro5 #H.O.T.# (HELLAS O/C Team) XFX POWER
5. 25792 Team VR-Zone Singapore EVGA 680i + ASUS EN8800 Ultras
And these guys are claiming a mildly overclocked single socket Barcelona (Agena FX) with a heavily overclocked pair of X2900s is besting this record, by a considerable margin.

Since it is from 'Inq, I take it with a grain of salt.

But if these muppets can do 30K with that system, imagine what shamino could do.

I did just read this and came to the conclusion that the 2900xt crossfire must be really cpu dependant.

As the score jumped from 23.7k at 2.5GHz to over 30k at 3GHz ... thats an incredible gain for just abit more cpu oopmh. They did have one of the top overclockers with them i believe as they had a 5.4GHz conroe stolen with all the other kit

I think they also overclocked the GPUs a bit when going from 2.5 to 3.0, which would account for a bit.

Its fairly mad performance though. Even when you consider intel's next gen, this thing should have the power to beat it. I'm starting to like AMD again.

^^
We'll see, although a bit of good news on the AMD front is always welcome.
I don't buy the stolen laptop part though, but we'll see. The author talks about similar benchies popping up in the very near future.

dsio, you might want to edit your OP a bit. It wasn't attempted on a single core, more like a single socket. It appears to be having 4 cores.

Nice pickup, I misread that statement, since I believed PhenomFX was the quad core part, and Agena was the single core part. Thanks for that.

we shall see indeed if this is the true performance of the R600 or even crossfire as i believe the chipset used is a dual 16x pci-e v2.0 design. The most we've had recently is a dual 8x design (i975x) or 16x and 4x design (p965, p35) not sure what the AMD 690 chipset is. The ATI RD580 was a dual 16x chipset but it sucked.

This is potentially good news. The crown "may" pass back to it's rightful owner soon. It is amazing to see everyone bash AMD after they were ahead for so long. How soon we forget.

I think the reason a lot of people bash AMD for the current situation is because there really is no good reason for AMD to be in its current spot except for greed and laziness on the part of AMD management.

AMD should have been putting resources into R&D and putting out Barcelona two years ago, not just getting it out now. The whole reason Intel caught AMD with their shorts down is because AMD's management decided to milk the cow until the udders were dry instead of investing money in breeding a better cow, and stupidly assumed that the farmer down the road would buy a replacement cow just like the one he already had, instead of buying a SuperCow that could produce twice as much milk on half as much hay.

And that's how a Missourian explains the processor market.

Needs more cow bell.

It's certainly got intel moving again, apparently tigertown (server platform) is now going to be demo'd a week today and released a week tomorrow, which would put it a few days ahead of Barca' launch.

Barca chips have also started to turn up apparently however they are only 1.9GHz chips and they are late, the channel was supposed to get them a few weeks ago and also clocked higher.

1.9GHz wont be enough to claw back the lead by any chance and intels 45nm chips are waiting at upto 3.33GHz already.

Hopefully this amd chip can do a whole lot more than a good 3dmark 06 score.

I couldn't agree more. And it's not like they've never seen what happens when you do that, cfr. Netburst...

The whole cow analogy is pretty funny.

Not near as good and Walken though.

http://www.overclockers.com/tips01208/

These guys appear to be sceptical as well. However one thing they should account for is that the CPU score in 3dm06 is also a factor in the global score.

Still. It still smells fishy to me as well, but it can't hurt to hope it's not ^^
