AMD Tri-Core CPUs on the cards

It looks like AMD will be producing a three core part, based on the new Barcelona architecture to compete in the middle ground between existing dual core solutions, and high end quad core parts. This could be quite a beneficial tack for AMD, as if yeilds on quad core Barcelona chips are not as good as they could have been, potentially one core may be disabled if it is at fault, resulting in a working tri core chip. Potentially this could even allow for higher clockspeeds if it is possible to cull a working, yet lower performing core to achieve a higher clock on the remaining three.

Either way, it is a nice option to have that Intel currently is incapable of exploiting, given their current technology.

Losing one core to potentially get considerably higher clocks could be beneficial, particularly in areas like gaming where that higher clock is more advantageous than having the fourth core.

3 legged dogs, tearful execs at Industrial Light and Magic, over the top benchmarks and yet nothing convincing enough for me to even plan a purchase.

My next machine will be a Phenom with a Geforce 9, which should work well as they will be released around the same time.

My next will be a Penryn w/ a 9 series. I don't like bashing AMD, More than 1/2 my rigs are AMD powered. I just wish they would they would stop the look at me, look at me, we have crap but it will get better, Oh here's some fabricated proof it will get better..

That attitude seemed to work pretty well for Microsoft.

Yes it did, but you can go alot farther if you have money and market share.. AMD has neither so they will have to rely on product performance which they don't have yet.

Ixnay translates to "Nix"

Nix meaning "Nothing" or, "To Veto", to "Refuse to agree", "To prohibit"

Classic pig latin.

I came accross this link a long while back

Are Three Cores Better Than Two? | Tom's Hardware

tom's hardware took a dual cpu board and fitted a dual core and a single core, giving three cores. Surprisingly enough, it worked, with a few issues. It's an interesting read!

Glueing a single core to a dual core. Anyone care to guess when Intel's approach should they wish to compete in Tri-Core.

I'd be surprised if they even dain to recognize it's existence, unless it's to show a duel core walking all over AMD's tri-core. If I were the evil Intel I would simply release a quad at the same price point, I wouldn't want to kill it, just cripple it's sales enough that it doesn't help them, I mean we live in a 8 core world that's just starting to toss large numbers of cores together.... How far can a three legged dog run, even a Greyhound?

I believe it is these days. I don't think AMD cares what they say anymore as long as they are saying something they seem to be happy with themselves.. Even though they have nothing to actually sell except.. Dog Piss..

Kind of like the advances in the server market, when everybody and their brother was running an Opty in a desktop board.
