AMD commits to socketed CPU future

Quote:
While Intel is remaining silent on rumours that its future processor families will be provided in a soldered-down ball-grid array (BGA) package only, AMD has stepped forward to publicly state that it plans to support swappable CPUs for the foreseeable future.

A good reason to support AMD?

Scariest thing I've heard in years. Why screw this up for the home user Intel? It's not like they lose money doing things as they have in the past.

Why do they never ask the consumer?

The fact is, the VAST majority of home users don't upgrade their CPU, or the motherboard, or the RAM, or the hard drive. In fact, they don't upgrade ANYTHING; they buy a new machine and throw the old one away.

In that environment, sockets for CPUs are an expensive luxury; money spent for an option nobody uses, or wants. I expect that we'll eventually start seeing motherboards configured with non-upgradable RAM as well, and for the same reasons.

Upgrade options for servers makes sense. For desktops, not so much, and ESPECIALLY not for tablets and netbooks.

Server motherboards are hella expensive, as are all the components they are designed to work with.

Plus, server motherboards are designed for stability, not overclocking.

Actually, sounds like the early days of overclocking all over again. And so the wheel turns.....

Sounds good to me! Things have become so easy in some ways.
Realistically, I rarely change a socketed processor, given that by the time I'm ready to change, the socket in use has changed anyway.

In ten years of over clocking I've only been able to upgrade once, I bought a chip used from Ciffer. But it's the principle of the thing! LOL
