Talking Noob's question, noob's question

What is the whole purpose of a CPU spacer?

Also, I have top of the line ThermalRight AX-7 with a gigantic Vantec Tornado 80x80x38 mm fan. Model TD80038H, 12v, 5700 RPM, 84.1 CFM, 55.2 dBA for my AMD XP2100+ running @1733mhz. But my processor temp. is still very hot @ 117*F and my case temp. @87*F. Temperatures was recorded before i even play any games.

What is wrong with that picture??

:nervous:

To the best of my knowledge, shims are used on AMD processors for the purpose of preventing physical damage caused by HS's that are not held within 2 Degrees of perfectly horizontal, aka perfectly parallel with the top of the CPU while they are installed. Unfortunately, the epoxy coating on AMD's processor's is weak. Therefore, it's too dang easy to chip the little glass slugs.

AMD's K7 family is especially weak on their edges. A chip on the top edge can be invisible to the naked eye, yet destroy the CPU.

If you are confident that you can install an HSF within the ridged guidelines necessary to prevent damage, remove the shim.

Edit. Then again, hot weather may be responsible for the elevated temperature!

May be poor contact like Cloasters suggested, poor conductive thermal grease, or warm weather... that's also not EXTREMELY hot, but with your setup, if truly idling, it should be about case temp (and plenty loud I'd assume ).
