nForce2 Single Channel DDR chipset overthrows Dual Channel DDR?

The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10384) reported a Soltek motherboard review made by Amdmb.com. The board has the new Nforce2 400 (non Ultra) chipset but it beat the Asus board with Nforce2 400 Ultra chipset in most tests. The theory is that the Nforce2 400's single channel memory doesn't have the additional overhead required by the Nforce2 400 Ultra's dual channel memory.

If this report is right, all us Nforce2 400 Ultra chipset owners (my board's an Abit NF7-S 2.0) may have paid too much. Sure there are other features that the Soltek motherboard doesn't have that current nForce2 400 Ultra chipset motherboards do have but mb manufacturers could include these additional features with the faster and cheaper chipset if they want to.

What do you guys think?

Here's hoping the next nforce driver release will boost the nForce2 400 Ultra performance so that it deserves the name "Ultra". Hmmm, maybe that's why it's taking so damn long.

Finally, I wonder if the dual channel overhead would still be a factor if you arranged the memory sticks as single channel.

"Finally, I wonder if the dual channel overhead would still be a factor if you arranged the memory sticks as single channel"

Intersting idea.

The advantage of Dual Channel DDR over Single Channel DDR in nForce2 chipsets is much hype and little substance, IMHO.

Another review of current chipsets for AMD CPU's is found at http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/chi...cketa-400.html . It's worth the click.

According to Xbitlab's "shootout," the Single Channel DDR nForce2 400 chipset lags behind the nForce2 Ultra 400 Dual Channel DDR in Memory performance by 2-3%. I read the original blurb about the nForce2 400 chipset as "it's faster than the Ultra-400," too. Gotta grab those headlines I guess.
